Course Overview and Outline

Outline and Lecture Descriptions

Course Overview: A brief overview of the entire course and what you can expect from each Section.

Introduction to Revit

User Interface: An introduction to the Revit user interface, including an overview of the project browser, properties palette, ribbon, tabs, quick access toolbar, and application menu.

Model and Annotation Elements: An overview of model and annotation elements, with an emphasis on their differences, how they are controlled via Visibility/ Graphic Overrides, and how they should be used.

Families and Parameters: Covers the three main types of Revit model Families, System Families, In-Place Families, and Loadable Families, and the difference between Instance and Type Parameters

Starting a Project File

Link CAD Survey: How to link a CAD, dwg file, with an overview of the settings and how to position and pin it in place. And how to manage the visibility of individual layers and the overall link.

Establish Coordinates: Shows how to use Acquire Coordinates and Specify Coordinates at Point to establish coordinates within a Revit site or landscape. Includes modifying the Survey Point and changing export settings to Shared.

Link Building File: How to link in a Revit building file and locate it accurately within the site or landscape.

Share Coordinates: How to publish Shared Coordinates from a Site file to a Building file, and also how the Site can then be linked into the Building file.

Modeling Site System Families

Property Lines: Shows how to create Property Lines by entering distances and bearings and also by sketching. Also shows how a schedule can be used to view the Property Lines as a table.

Topography: Create a Toposurface: How to create a Toposurface from a dwg import using a TINN or contour lines.

Topography: Edit Surface and Graded Regions: Shows how to modify points to correct inaccurate Topo triangulation along contour lines. Also shows how to create an existing and proposed Toposurface using Graded Region.

Subregions: How to create and modify Subregions within a Toposurface, with an overview of Subregion properties, their limitations, and a known glitch.

Building Pads: How to create and modify Building Pads, including the Slope Arrow.

Modeling Architectural System Families

Floors: An overview of modeling Floors, including drawing boundaries, modifying sub-elements, and creating Slab Edges. Also shows how to modify the structure of a Floor and how to use Offset and Temporary dimensions when drawing boundaries.

Shape-Editing Floors: A more in-depth explanation and detailed example of how to modify sub-elements to create a Shape-Edited Floor. Also demonstrates the effects and potential drawbacks of using this method.

Walls: An overview of creating walls in the landscape, with a review of the wall Location Line, Structure, Sweeps, Reveals, Editing Profiles, and modifying Wall Joins.

Stairs: How to create Stairs, using Stair by Component, including an overview of the types and structure of stairs, how to adjust tread depth and riser height, modify the default railing, stair supports, and creating a custom stair by sketch.

Railings: How to create Railings on Stairs, Floors, or a Level. An overview of the components of Railings, including Rail Structure, Baluster Placement, and Continuous Rails.

Modeling In-Place and Loadable Site Families

In-Place Curbs: How to use Model In-Place to create Curbs along the edge of a Shape-Edited Floor. Covers the basics of Model In-Place, including creating a Sweep, applying a Profile, applying a Subcategory, and Material parameters. Also covers creating a curb transition from a Swept Blend.

More In-Place Components: Two additional examples of In-Place components: using an In-Place void to modify the profile of a curved Wall and modeling the below-grade structure of a Stair with an In-Place sweep.

Loadable Site Components: How to place loadable components on various hosts and surfaces. Demonstrates how components might embed into or float above a host (particularly Topography). How to rotate and align components upon placement. Also shows how to adjust instance and type parameters.

Plantings: Overview of the properties of a default RPC Planting family. How to place Plantings using Array and how to Match Type Properties. Also a brief introduction to using a Planting Schedule and a Planting Tag.

Documentation

Annotations: Text, Symbols, and Dimensions: How to use and customize simple plain Text notes and several Generic Annotations/ Symbols, including Notes and Generic Spot Elevations. Also how to place and override Dimensions and how to use the three types of Spot Dimensions: Spot Elevations, Spot Coordinates, and Spot Slopes.

Annotations: Tags and Keynotes: An overview of Tags and Keynote Tags, including how to place them and which parameters are pulled into the Tag. Also shows how to edit Tags and their Labels and how Keynotes are frequently used to annotate detailed sections.

Views: How to use Floor Plan views to create Site/ Landscape Plans. How to create new views using Section, Elevation, Duplicate, and Callout. Also how to create a 3D perspective camera view. An overview of the View Control Bar and a brief introduction to View Templates.

Schedules: An overview of the types of Schedules, how to create a new Note Block Schedule and best practices for working with Notes and Note Blocks. How to create a typical Quantity Schedule and modify the Schedule Properties, including an explanation of Fields, Filters, Sorting/Grouping, Formatting, and Appearance.

Sheets: How to create new Sheets, including an overview of typical Sheet properties. How to place and align Views on a Sheet. How to directly edit a View from a Sheet and modify the View Title. Also, how to place Schedules on a Sheet and create and modify a Sheet List.

Print and Export: An overview of printing and exporting to various file formats, including pdf, image (jpeg, png), dwf and dwg.

Additional Concepts

Phasing and Existing Conditions: How to creating Existing elements, with an overview of Phases, Phase Filters, and Graphic Overrides.

Grading and Cut/Fill: How to determine the Cut, Fill, and Net Cut/Fill of a project, including how to create a Topography schedule and create a view showing the Cut or Fill of the entire site.

Starting a Layout: How to insert and scale an image as a basis for a design or layout. Also includes an introduction to reference planes and how to use them with constraints.

Levels and Terracing: An example that demonstrates when and how to use Levels out in a site and also how to model Floors, Stairs, Railings, and Walls hosted to a Level.

Areas as Planting Areas: An overview of how to use Areas as Planting Areas, including creating and managing Area Plans, properties of Areas and Area Boundaries, how to create "types" using Area Styles, and how to manage Area Tags and plant quantities from the Area schedule.
